Stem

Usually flowers and fruits when 1-2 m tall, sometimes when smaller.

Leaves

Leaves linear, 25-70 x 0.8-2 cm. Margins finely toothed, the teeth just visible with a lens. One vein on either side of the midrib more prominent than the rest.

Flowers

Inflorescence terminal on a peduncle 25-100 cm long ending in a rosette of bract-like leaves. Flowers borne in spikes arranged in a panicle. Lower flowers in each spike are female while the upper flowers are hermaphrodite.

Fruit

Fruits (nuts) enclosed in persistent bracts and perianth segments. Nuts ca. 1.5 x 0.75 mm, nearly 3-lobed in transverse section.

Distribution and Ecology

Occurs in NT, CYP and NEQ. Altitudinal range from near sea level to 150 m. Grows in rain forest and gallery forest. Also occurs in New Guinea.
